Report Coverage

The report profiles 15 companies including major players Pretoria Portland Cement, Afrisam, Lafarge SA, and Natal Portland Cement and relatively new players Sephaku and Mamba.
The Manufacture of Cement, Lime and Plaster
The South African cement industry has an installed capacity of over 20 million tons per annum and employs some 16,000 people. A lack of large infrastructure projects and low business confidence has resulted in continued declines in demand for cement products. Industry stakeholders forecast that the current oversupply could continue for at least the next 10 years.
Mounting Challenges
Cement consumption is markedly lower than supply and the industry continues to suffer from low demand growth due to a struggling construction industry and stagnant infrastructure spending. Manufacturers have been supported to some extent by successes in their regional markets. Producers have been cutting costs and streamlining their operations, but the industry is considered to be ripe for consolidation. In addition to local challenges, rising imports are putting additional pressure on local producers. The sector is subject to ongoing investigations and concerns regarding competition.
