The collapse of out-of-home sales following the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic has profoundly disrupted Ghana’s beverages industry. Although at-home consumption has risen, it has only partially offset the loss of revenue typically generated from sales to restaurants, hotels, bars and other venues. However, despite the extremely challenging trading environment, role players say that the industry was relatively resilient in 2020. While the rapid rise of online retail is a significant development, role players do not anticipate that Ghanaian shoppers will be foregoing the shopping mall experience in the near future. They predict that companies will increasingly focus on developing new products tailored to Ghana’s largely untapped female millennial market. With the vaccination rollout underway and business confidence recovering, analysts say that Ghana’s economic growth prospects look promising.

Outlook

Despite its recent economic woes, Ghana is still viewed by many analysts as a preferred destination for international trade and investment in the West African sub-region. Analysts believe that the Ghanaian market is largely untapped and that opportunities for growth exist in both the alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages segments. It is anticipated that heightened brand awareness and the emerging urbanised middle class will increasingly drive demand for branded beverages across all segments. On the macroeconomic front, analysts forecast that the implementation of tighter monetary policy and other stabilisation measures will result in slower economic growth in Ghana in the short term, but that economic activity will recover in the medium term, growing at an average annual rate of around 6.7%. However, given Ghana’s high level of public debt, borrowing on the commercial market could prove difficult. Notwithstanding initiatives to diversify the Ghanaian economy, the West African nation remains vulnerable to sustained downward pressures on the international benchmark prices of crude oil, gold and cocoa. Exchange rate volatility impacts particularly negatively on the beverages industry, given its high level of exposure to imported inputs. Further weakening of the Ghanaian cedi would impact heavily on the industry, particularly on water sachet producers who are already struggling to remain profitable.
