Introduction

This report focuses on the manufacture of nut food, including wholesaling and processing. South Africa is the world’s largest producer and exporter of macadamia nuts and it produces pecan, and on a smaller scale, walnut, almond, cashews, hazelnut, pistachios, and peanuts. The nuts produced locally are mostly export-oriented as this provides the largest revenue. Global demand for nuts has been growing as an increasing number of consumers opt for healthier lifestyles. The greatest nut consumption is in high-income countries, with almonds being the most popular. In South Africa, peanuts are the most consumed as they are more affordable than other nuts. South Africa consumes about 81,496 tons of peanuts annually as edible nuts and as processed peanut butter. According to Stats SA, 0.05% of every R100 spent on groceries in South Africa goes towards a bottle of peanut butter.

Strengths

• Ongoing research conducted to further develop the industry.
• Significant contributor to economic growth and development.
• South Africa is a producer of high-quality macadamia and pecans.
• South Africa is the leading producer and exporter of macadamia.

Weaknesses

• It is more expensive to produce peanut butter and roasted peanuts locally than to import.
• Loss of macadamia through theft/crime syndicates.
• Most nuts are exported without any added value.
• Reliant on imports.

Opportunities

• Growing use of nuts in various industries.
• Unmet demand in the regional market.
• Unmet local demand.

Threats

• Competition from other countries.
• Constrained consumer spending driven by worsening economic situation.
• Drought and water shortages.
• Increase macadamia production in China.
• Rising input costs.

Outlook

South Africa’s nut industry, especially the macadamia sector, has grown significantly in the last few years, driven by increased global demands. This trend is likely to continue for the foreseeable future. However, China’s increasing macadamia production could result in South Africa losing its position as leading producer and exporter and see exports to China reduce. According to Gilberto Biacuana, Land Bank economist and research analyst, “It is unclear when such an increase in supply is likely to happen. Nonetheless, such a likelihood remains a risk to the global macadamia nut market in the near future. Hopefully, the South African macadamia nut industry will adapt and seek new markets.”
