Report Coverage

This report focuses on management consulting and business advisory services including knowledge management in South Africa. It includes information on the state and size of the industry, significant issues and challenges, and subsectors such as knowledge management and business rescue. There are profiles of 53 companies including major players such as Accenture, BDO, McKinsey, KPMG, Deloitte and PwC and institutions such as Business Partners and the Free State Development Corporation.

Introduction

The management consulting and business advisory services industry forms part of the knowledge industry. The sector has been affected by the pandemic, which limited in-person consultations and travel and resulted in a number of clients cancelling projects, as well as allegations that several big management consulting firms, including McKinsey & Company and Bain & Company, were implicated in corruption by the state capture enquiry. Some mid-tier and boutique management consultancies have been able to capitalise on the crisis. Demand for consulting and business advisory services is rising, driven by clients looking for help with digital transformation, which increased during the pandemic. Enterprise and supplier development (ESD) and turnaround and business rescue consulting also represent growing opportunities for business consultants. Knowledge management is becoming increasingly driven by digital tools.

Strengths

• Effective knowledge management promotes innovation and enhances productivity, profitability and sustainability.
• Government has prioritised the development of the knowledge economy.
• Leading global consulting firms operate alongside micro-consultancies.
• Management and business consulting in South Africa is a mature, well-established industry that serves all sectors of the economy.
• The industry is competitive and barriers to entry are low.

Weaknesses

• Dogged by corruption scandals, the industry has suffered significant reputational damage and public confidence in the bona fides of consultants has declined.
• Highly skilled consultants with the requisite experience are in short supply and the cost of retaining staff is high.
• The industry is highly fragmented.
• The South African consulting industry is self-regulated.
• The uptake of knowledge management solutions is constrained by the country’s relatively limited appetite for knowledge sharing.

Opportunities

• Demand for digital transformation solutions is growing, fuelled by the pandemic.
• Demand is growing from companies for digital marketing, sustainable business solutions and help meeting health and safety regulations.
• Enterprise and supplier development (ESD) has been identified as a growing opportunity for business consultants.
• Increase use of freelancers is opening up opportunities for smaller firms.
• New standards for business advisors who consult for incubators and accelerators could increase the value of this service.
• The development of new knowledge management solutions for digitally transformed organisations.
• There is high demand for business rescue and turnaround solutions, driven by the pandemic.
• With companies expanding their operations across Africa and to other parts of the globe, there are opportunities for consultants to establish a presence in markets where their clients are represented

Threats

• Corruption is an ever-present challenge.
• Cybersecurity breaches pose a threat to information and knowledge security at both consulting firms and their clients.
• Low economic growth threatens to limit expansion in the sector.
• The brain drain of skilled consultants could reduce the available skills.
• The industry is highly exposed to domestic political and economic instability.
• The rising competitiveness of the market, with client-companies increasingly relying on internal resources, or shifting away from traditional consulting firms to alternative independent consulting models.

Outlook

The image of management consulting has been negatively affected by scandals in connection with state capture. Despite this, the current growth prospects for the management consulting and business advisory sector in South Africa appear sound, believes IQ Business CEO Adam Craker, who says his own company has grown sales at 15% to 20% per year over the past five or more years. SNG Grant Thornton national head of business consulting Yugen Pillay says work for consultants has picked up in 2022 compared to the previous two years, and consultants are expected to benefit from opportunities in business transformation, strategy and financial services. Nonetheless, a brain drain of skilled consultants and low economic growth remain key challenges. In a January 2022 survey of 365 knowledge management professionals by US benchmarking organisation American Productivity & Quality Centre, more than two-thirds of participants stated that their organization's plan to increase knowledge management investments over the next year or more.

Report Coverage

The report on Management Consulting and Business Advisory Services describes the industry, recent developments and the factors influencing the sector’s performance. It includes comprehensive profiles of 46 firms including multinational firms operating in South Africa such as McKinsey and Bain, both of which were implicated in state capture revelations. It includes profiles on the major auditing and advisory firms such as Deloitte, PwC, EY and KPMG and specialist firms such as Hoorah Digital. Profiled companies that specialise in knowledge management include Knowlead Consulting & Training, IQbusiness and Pinoak Consulting.

Introduction

The management consulting and business advisory services industry forms part of the knowledge industry. The multi-disciplinary sector has long been a driving force in the South African economy. Revelations that consultants from several multinational firms were found to be complicit in state capture misdeeds have rocked the industry and the nation at large. Mired in corruption scandals and grappling with consulting expenditure cutbacks, the lucrative industry appears to have lost its lustre. Notwithstanding the magnitude of the challenges facing the sector, some mid-tier and boutique management consultancies appear to be well positioned to capitalise on the crisis. Moreover, demand for insights-driven consulting and business advisory services is rising steadily. With the advent of the fourth industrial revolution (4IR) and the internet of everything (IoE), some role players say that knowledge management is increasingly being regarded as a potential game-changer.

• The industry is agile and highly innovative.

• East Africa has been identified as a knowledge hub centred around Kampala, Uganda and Nairobi, Kenya.
• High growth segments include robo/digital advisory consulting; high-end strategy consulting; business operations restructuring; sustainability and environmental management consulting; technological consulting; digital media consulting; and business advisory services.
• The development of new knowledge management solutions for digitally transformed organisations.
• The ‘monetising’ of data through data science consulting.
• With companies expanding their operations across Africa and to other parts of the globe, there are opportunities for consultants to establish a presence in markets where their clients are represented.

Threats

• Cyber security breaches pose a threat to information and knowledge security.
• Further reductions in public sector expenditure on consultancy services.
• Rising geopolitical tensions, trade wars and a global economic slow-down.
• The industry is highly exposed to domestic political and economic instability.
• The rising competiveness of the market, with client-companies increasingly relying on internal resources, or shifting away from traditional consulting firms to alternative independent consulting models.
• The scourge of corruption is an ever-present challenge.

Outlook

As players implicated in corruption scandals endeavour to rebuild trust and repair their tarnished reputations, role players say that South Africa’s traditional management consulting industry faces an uncertain future. However, demand for business advisory services is expected to remain strong. Stakeholders say that the creation and implementation of effective knowledge management solutions and other value propositions that promote the sustainable growth of businesses will ultimately drive the country’s economic recovery. Analysts have identified digital advisory consulting as a growth segment. The disruptive impact of technology-driven transformation will continue to have a profound impact on the way in which consultants, business advisors and knowledge managers operate. Notwithstanding the South African government’s directives to curb expenditure on consultants, some commentators anticipate that demand for knowledge management solutions, technology and strategy consulting services will strengthen, particularly in the public education and healthcare sectors.

Report Coverage

The Management Consulting and Business Advisory Services report describes current conditions, recent trends including digital disruption and other factors that influence the success of the sector. The report profiles 40 companies, including global strategy consulting leaders with a South African footprint, Boston Consulting Group, McKinsey & Company, Bain & Company and Alexander Proudfoot. Also profiled are technology firms, such as Accenture and IBM Global Business Services, and provincial agency, the Gauteng Growth and Development Agency SOC Ltd.

Introduction

The Management Consulting and Business Advisory Services industry performs a pivotal role in all sectors of the South African economy, providing a multitude of value-added services that seek to enhance performance and productivity. The number of consultants, business advisors and business coaches exceeds 60,000 while the annual revenue of the sector is estimated at more than R70bn. However, even though this multi-dimensional industry is highly strategic in nature, public service expenditure on consultants decreased by 12.6% in real terms between 2012/13 and 2015/16 and both private and public sector projects are proving increasingly difficult to procure.

Strengths

• It is competitive and barriers to entry are low.
• Leading global consulting firms are represented in the South Africa market.
• The industry is innovative and has a high level of flexibility.
• The industry serves all sectors of the economy.

Weaknesses

• Highly skilled consultants with the requisite experience are in short supply and the cost of retaining staff is high.
• The industry is highly fragmented.
• The South African consulting industry is unregulated.

Opportunities

• High growth segments include high-end strategy consulting; environmental management consulting; and technological consulting.
• Opportunities in the sub-Saharan African market are plentiful.
• The ‘monetising’ of data through data science consulting.

Threats

• An uptake of in-house consulting divisions, using internal resources.
• Domestic political and economic instability, as well as global geopolitical and macroeconomic pressures.
• Further reductions in government expenditure on consultancy services.
• The “Crowdsourcing” consulting model represents a competitive threat to traditional consultancies.

Outlook

Digital disruption and the current climate of uncertainty will continue to present opportunities for consultants to help their clients navigate through the rapidly evolving business landscape. Given the precarious state of South Africa’s economic environment, commentators warn that the provision of sound strategic direction is of critical importance. Thus, according to stakeholders, management consultants, business advisers and mentors have a pivotal role to play in ensuring the future sustainability and profitability of both private companies and public entities. With the evolution of consulting models and the advent of Artificial Intelligence technologies, consultants and business advisers will also be required to redefine the scope of their service offerings.

Introduction

This report focuses on Business and Management Consultancy activities in South Africa. The industry, which generates an average annual income in excess of R70bn, serves all sectors of the South African economy. Given the skills deficit in South Africa, business and management consultants have been in great demand over the past two decades. However, the industry, already having to contend with the sluggish economic environment, finds itself under growing pressure following recommendations made by Auditor-General Kimi Makwetu for the South African Government to slash expenditure on consultants.

Strengths

• It is competitive and barriers to entry are low.
• Leading global consulting firms are represented in the South Africa market.
• The industry has a high level of flexibility.
• The industry serves all sectors of the economy.

Weaknesses

• Highly skilled consultants with the requisite experience are in short supply and the cost of retaining staff is high.
• The industry is highly fragmented.
• The South African consulting industry is unregulated.

Opportunities

• High growth segments include high-end strategy consulting, environmental management consulting and technological consulting.
• Opportunities in the sub-Saharan African market are plentiful.

Threats

• An uptake of in-house consulting divisions, using internal resources.
• Further reductions in government expenditure on consultancy services.
• Recessionary pressures.

Outlook

The role of traditional business and management consultants is becoming progressively more blurred. Consulting and advisory processes are converging and analysts predict that consultants will become increasingly more involved in the implementation of projects. It is also anticipated that consultants will continue to expand their service bouquets to include long-term outcomes-based business coaching and mentoring. Going forward, virtual or online consulting is expected to become increasingly prevalent. With governments and public entities pruning their consulting budgets, analysts predict that consulting firms will be obliged to seek opportunities in new markets. Despite the risks associated with doing business in sub-Saharan Africa, the region offers a broad spectrum of opportunities for the consulting industry. Analysts predict that demand for strategic planning specialists, technology consultants and consultants in environmental management will continue in the short term.
