Manufacture of Soap, Cleaning and Sanitising Products, Wax and Polishes

Soap and hygiene solutions are key to containing the spread of coronavirus, and producers of these products are playing an essential role in the pandemic response. Role players say that demand for cleaning products, sanitising agents and disinfectants soared prior to the start of lockdown in March, with bleach retail sales surging. While some suppliers of industrial cleaning and sanitising products have reported subdued sales, others say that a flurry of deep-cleaning, disinfection and maintenance work undertaken during industry downtime has buoyed demand.

Key Trends

Sales volumes of soap and hand sanitisers, surface cleaners, bleach and other disinfectants have increased sharply since the outbreak of the pandemic. Demand for buying in bulk has strengthened, and consumers are increasingly switching to multi-purpose products. Environmentally-friendly biological products and packaging have been developed, and there is greater use of natural ingredients. In laundry care, consumers are increasingly switching from products in powder and bar form to more concentrated products in liquid, liquid tablet or pod form.

Changing Environment

The shift from chemicals to sustainable biological products is largely being driven by concerns relating to the toxicity of various chemicals and the irresponsible sourcing of raw ingredients, notably palm oil. Although still small, the market for eco-friendly cleaning products is growing steadily. With the outbreak of the pandemic, demand for most categories of cleaning and sanitising products has increased substantially and manufacturers ramped up production of products such as bleach, soap and other personal and household hygiene products.

Report Coverage

This report on the manufacture of soap and cleaning products, wax and polishes includes comprehensive information on laundry care, dishwashing cleaners, surface care, wax products and personal care products. It reports on the size and state of the industry and the factors that influence it. There are profiles of 49 companies including the major multinational players such as Unilever, Reckitt Benckiser, Colgate-Palmolive, and Johnson & Johnson, major local players such as Tiger Consumer Brands, Bliss Brands, Shield Chemicals and Amka Products, and contract manufacturers such as Beige Holdings.

Manufacture of Soap and Cleaning Products, Wax and Polishes

The manufacture of cleaning products, wax and polishes is a well-established industry in South Africa where several multinational companies and major home-grown players compete. The annual retail sales value of cleaning products is estimated to be around R20bn, with the largest segment being laundry care. Personal hygiene products and cleaning agents have traditionally been regarded as essential items, but economic pressures have altered consumer spending patterns and household cleaning products are no longer considered a necessity.

Industry Trends

Customer loyalty is declining, with consumers increasingly shopping around for discounts, trading down or trying different products that offer better value for money, and established brands continue to lose market share to cheaper private label brands. The decline in disposable income continues to drive demand for smaller unit sizes and for products packaged in economical refill packets. Consumers are also increasingly switching from laundry care products in powder and bar format to more concentrated cleaning products in liquid, liquid tablet or pod form.

Low Barriers to Entry

There has been a proliferation of informal micro-manufacturers of cleaning and hygiene products, many of whom have successfully transitioned to the formal sector. Industry growth drivers include South Africa’s growing middle-class, population expansion, urbanisation, and the provision of social housing, water and sanitation to previously unserved communities.

Report Coverage

The Manufacture of Soap and Cleaning Products, Wax and Polishes report describes current conditions, the performance of industry players and trends in the local market. The challenges faced by role players as well as factors that influence the success of the sector are also covered. The report profiles 48 companies, including local company Blendwell which produces cleaning agents specifically for use in the food industry, and household appliance manufacturer, Miele, which produces its own range of washing powders and dishwashing detergents under the Miele Care Collection label. Also profiled is Ecozyme Enzymes CC, a micro-enterprise that manufactures and supplies environmentally-friendly cleaning products for cleaning, hygiene, chemical and facilities management companies.

The Manufacture of Soap and Cleaning Products, Wax and Polishes

In South Africa the manufacture of soap and cleaning products, wax and polishes is a multi-billion rand industry that is dominated by large multinational Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) players. There are currently around 250 players that operate in South Africa’s formal sector which employs approximately 16,000 people, but no statistics are available for companies active in the informal sector.

Environmental Concerns

During the past decade, the manufacture of soap and cleaning products has been the subject of intense scrutiny. One of the primary concerns is that most cleaning agents contain chemicals that are potentially harmful to the environment. Environmentalists warn that hazardous chemicals found in a wide range of cleaning products generally seep into the groundwater when they are flushed down drains, contaminating the soil and ultimately, the food chain. In response numerous ‘green’ product ranges have been developed and progress has been made in the drive to make the industry cleaner, greener and more sustainable. The proposed Chemicals Management Bill and the Hazardous Substances Amendment Bill are expected to have an impact on the sector once they are passed into law.

Report Coverage

The Manufacture of Soap and Cleaning Products, Wax and Polishes describes the industry in South Africa, highlights trends locally and globally and discusses the factors influencing the success of the sector. Forty-nine companies are profiled, ranging from speciality chemical manufacturer AECI Ltd and Shield Chemicals (Pty) Ltd to local contract manufacturers Le-Sel Research, Beige Holdings and Prime Product Manufacturing. Also profiled are small manufacturers such as The Soap Factory CC, Acorn Pharmaceuticals (Pty) Ltd, Ecozyme Enzymes CC and Chem-Fresh that employ fewer than 15 people, as well as the market leaders in the different product categories.

The Manufacture of Soap and Cleaning Products, Wax and Polishes

This report focuses on the manufacture of soap, cleaning products, wax and polishes in South Africa. This multi-billion rand industry continues to be dominated by large multinational fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) players, notably Unilever, Reckitt Benckiser, Procter & Gamble, Colgate-Palmolive and Johnson & Johnson. The local small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) which operate in the sector generally manufacture non-branded cleaning agents that are supplied to independent wholesalers and/or to the informal sector.

A Competitive Market

Although cleaning products remain out of reach of a great number of South Africans, personal hygiene products as well as household cleaning agents and polishes are increasingly regarded as essential items by the 21st century South African consumer, and demand from low-income households is steadily rising. As economic conditions worsen however, cash-strapped consumers are increasingly trading down to unbranded products and/or house brands. The range of house brands has become varied and sophisticated, with private labels, notably Woolworths, Pick ’n Pay’s “No Name Brand”, Shoprite’s “Ritebrand” and Checkers’ “Housebrand” evolving into brands in their own right.
