Report Coverage

This report focuses on the printing industry and includes information on the newspaper and magazine industry and printing of packaging and labels and other printed matter. It includes information on the state of the sector, the effects of the pandemic on sales, circulation and advertising, the performance of major players and corporate developments. There are profiles of 71 companies including the major players in printing such as Novus Holdings, Caxton & CTP, Bidvest’s office and print division, Hirt & Carter, and the Government Printing Works. Profiles also include print packaging players such as Mpact and Nampak, whose Bevcan division prints on the cans it manufactures. Publishing groups profiled include Media24 and Arena Holdings.

The Printing Industry in South Africa

The print media sector has experienced significant disruption from digitisation and declining advertising spend over some decades. The decline in newspaper and magazine circulation was exacerbated by lockdowns, and resulted in several large companies closing or restructuring. Associated Media Publishing closed down in 2020 while Media24 announced the closure of several newspapers and magazines and the consolidation of some of its business operations and Caxton & CTP closed 10 magazine titles and distribution. The pandemic caused increased demand for packaging due to the growth in online sales and greater demand for digital printing.

New Technology

Digital printing technologies continue to displace conventional analogue processes and one of the biggest developments in printing has been the shift towards smaller runs with greater customisation. 3D printing is increasingly popular and being used for a growing number of applications. Smart labels become active in response to a trigger and store information such as expiry dates, batch information and product tracking data, while radio-frequency identification can be attached to products for tracking and tracing. QR codes are also used for item identification, product tracking and providing information to consumers.

Report Coverage

This report focuses on general printing, print packaging, print finishing and printing on non-paper and board products, including clothing, textiles, plastics, metals and glass. The report includes descriptions of the size of the industry, major players, industry developments and factors which influence the sector’s success. It includes comprehensive reports on 72 companies. These include Novus Holdings, the dominant player with a print market share of approximately 65%, and other notable players such Caxton & CTP, Bidvest’s office and print division and the print packaging segment’s Mpact and Nampak.

The Printing Industry

The South African printing industry and its suppliers contributed approximately R55bn to gross domestic product and provided around 45,000 jobs in 2017. Digital disruption continues to drive the decline of the commercial analogue printing segment, and print output volumes are on a steady downward trajectory. Some role players indicate that innovative technological advances sweeping through the sector present new opportunities for the industry.

Digital Disruption

During the past decade, far-reaching changes have swept through the South African printing industry, with digital printing technologies becoming mainstream processes at the expense of conventional analogue printing. The circulation figures of most categories of publications in print format continue to decline, and the contraction in commercial printing throughput has resulted in an oversupply of web and gravure print capacity. With profit margins narrowing and technological advances continuing to drive disruption in the traditional print landscape, local printers are increasingly opting to reposition their businesses in an effort to remain sustainable.

Report Coverage

The Printing Industry details the current state of the sector, the impact of digitisation and other factors influencing the success of the industry. The report also profiles 49 players in the market, including leaders in the General Printing and Print Finishing segments, Caxton & CTP Publishers and Printers Ltd and Novus Holdings Ltd, formerly the Paarl Media Group. Also profiled are Nampak, Mpact and AstraPak, the dominant companies in South Africa’s Print Packaging market.

The Printing Industry

The South African printing industry, which generated revenue of R56bn in 2015, performs a valuable role in the South African economy and provides over 50,000 employment opportunities. There are an estimated 2,000 commercial printing companies operating in the country, the majority of which are small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs). A further 1,000 companies provide pre-press services, such as design and layout, or post-press services, including finishing and binding.

A Changing Sector

In recent years fundamental changes have swept through the industry, with digital printing technologies emerging as mainstream processes at the expense of conventional analogue printing. As far-reaching technological advances, including 3D printing, disrupt the traditional print landscape, some local printers have had to reposition themselves in the market in order to remain relevant. Some sectors of the local industry are becoming more vertically integrated, with processes that would have been outsourced in the past increasingly being performed in-house. In keeping with current global trends, the South African printing industry is investing in new technologies that deliver enhanced printing quality. The rapid evolution of the industry has necessitated the upskilling of employees and although new recruits undergo training, there is a serious skills deficit. At the same time stakeholders fear that the migration from traditional printing processes to digital printing could result in job losses, as digital printing is more automated and less labour-intensive than analogue printing.

Report Coverage

The report on the South African printing industry describes the current market, lists corporate actions and other developments within the sector and focuses on factors influencing the success of the industry. The report profiles the major South African companies within the sector as well as print on demand franchises and SMMEs such as Beith Digital (Pty) Ltd and Altstadt Printing CC.

The South African Printing Sector

South Africa’s printing sector plays a valuable role in the local economy, providing approximately 54,000 formal jobs and generating annual revenue of around R51bn. The majority of local printing companies are SMMEs employing fewer than 100 people but the sector is dominated by large companies. Caxton & CTP Publishers and Printers Limited and Novus Holdings Limited, formerly Media24, are market leaders in the printing and finishing of magazines, books, catalogues and other commercial printing while Nampak, Mpact and AstraPak Limited dominate the print packaging market.

Developments in the Sector

The uptake of digitisation has impacted negatively on a significant number of printing companies, as well as on their suppliers, especially in the stationery sub-sector and as far as the printing of newspapers and magazines is concerned. This has resulted in the closure of numerous operations and a shift in focus for many companies, with Caxton for example expanding its packaging operations with the acquisition of Nampak’s Carton and Labels division. There has been growth in the print packaging and labelling segments, largely attributed to e-commerce, and analysts believe that this positive trend will continue. Digital printing technologies, including Print-on Demand and 3D-printing, have revolutionised the industry and are providing new opportunities for established printing companies and newcomers to the sector.
