Travel and Tourism, Travel Agencies, Tour Operators and Related Services Industry in South Africa

South Africa's struggling tourism industry is slowly recovering from the pandemic, where border closures, flight cancellations, and onerous entry requirements cut nearly 500,000 jobs from the country’s tourism sector. The sector has an extensive value chain and labour creation capacity, and is a vital contributor to the South African economy and a significant foreign exchange earner. Demand is volatile and seasonal and supply is fragmented, inflexible and dominated by fixed investment costs.

Recovery

Many travel agents and tour operators’ operations diminished to almost nothing, flights came to a standstill and hotels and restaurants lay empty during the pandemic. A growing number of companies and organisations have been forced to permanently close their doors. Revenue loss and ongoing operational costs have resulted in substantial cash flow problems for many companies. Some experts are expecting the situation to normalise by 2024. But travellers are returning, and 9.3 million travellers (total arrivals and departures of both international and South Africans) passed through South African ports of entry and exit in 2021 and 8.8 million travellers have passed through in the first half of 2022, more than double the first half of 2021.

Influencing Factors

As the industry recovers from the pandemic, the Russia-Ukraine war has exacerbated already high oil prices and transportation costs, increased uncertainty and caused some travel disruptions. The war has led to huge fuel price increases in 2022 and there could be further increases, which may have a substantial impact on the travel and tourism industry.

Travel and Tourism: Travel Agencies, Tour Operators and Related Services

The travel agency and tour operator industry, which was disrupted in recent years by technology, faced unprecedented disruption as lockdowns and travel bans effectively stopped them for operating for much of 2020 and 2021. Travel agents and tour operators’ businesses dwindled to almost nothing, some closed and many jobs in the industry were lost.

Trends

The biggest travel trend over the past decade is the shift to online booking. Industry sources said that companies that provide good advice and information on health and security measures and flexible payment and booking options will have a competitive advantage. Due to lockdown restrictions, the emphasis is on local travel and travel to neighbouring countries. Some people are increasingly concerned about responsible travel and monitor their own footprint as they travel.

Technology and Innovation

Technology is driving improved efficiencies and service levels, but is also leading to more choice for consumers. Traditional travel agents are increasingly being disintermediated by online travel agents and aggregators. It is now commonplace for travellers to book their own flights and accommodation online. Digital platforms also enable individuals to offer their homes as tourist accommodation to consumers directly . Virtual reality provides travellers with guided tours and a preview of what they can expect at their destination. Personalised marketing, which uses client data to personalise advertising and promotion, is being implemented by online travel agencies.

It includes information on the size and state of the sector and international and domestic tourism statistics. There are profiles of 53 companies including well known players such as Tourvest, Travelstart, and Rennies Travel. Travel and Tourism: Travel Agencies. Tour Operators and Related services

The travel and tourism sector is a labour-intensive industry that has been identified by government as a key driver for South Africa’s economic and social development. Government wants to double international tourist arrivals by 2030. The coronavirus pandemic has resulted in global and domestic restrictions on travel, and the travel and tourism sector is expected to be severely affected.

Disruption

The sector has been disrupted in recent years by sites and apps that have replaced the services of travel agents, and taken market share away from traditional players. However, for bulk tour and cruise bookings, brick and mortar travel agencies still maintain a large share as clients can save money by booking through an agent. Online tools and video conferencing, which have become increasingly prevalent in the lockdown, have reduced the amount of travel and business meetings as they save money and time. Many check-in and customer service processes are now automated.

Coronavirus

The coronavirus outbreak has resulted in the suspension of travel and tourism into and around South Africa. Most tourist accommodation has shut down for the lockdown, as have travel agencies. The lockdown will have a significant impact on the travel and tourism sector, and the recovery will be slow due to an expected reluctance to travel and because tourism has one of the highest risks of transmitting the virus. The Department of Tourism has made R200m available to assist SMEs.

A Changing Industry

In recent years, the industry has experienced disruption with the growth of internet travel portals offering consumers direct bookings. The industry continues to be disrupted by social buying networks that offer substantially discounted rates, as well as platforms such as Airbnb. The industry is highly exposed to domestic and external macroeconomic, political, geopolitical, social and climatic factors. Crime, natural disasters and exchange rate volatility also affect travel and tourism. The severe water crisis in the Western Cape, devastating fires around Knysna and the outbreak of Listeriosis affected travel in 2017. Contentious visa regulations which had a significant negative effect on tourism, were amended, easing some of the challenges ravellers to South Africa experienced.

Travel & Tourism: Travel Agencies, Tour Operators and Related Services

South Africa’s National Development Plan (NDP) identifies Tourism as one of the main drivers of employment and economic growth. The domestic travel and tourism industry supports more than 1.4 million jobs across the entire value chain, with travel agencies and related reservation services providing over 30,000 direct jobs. With annual internal expenditure on travel agencies and similar reservation services amounting to more than R9bn, this segment is a significant contributor to the South African economy and is a valuable source of foreign currency.

A changing Industry

The traditional divide between the retail and wholesale segments of the travel industry has become increasingly blurred. At the same time, with the uptake of digitisation, consumers are bypassing the middle man and making their own holiday and travel arrangements. Although some traditional role players in the view internet-based travel sites as a threat, a significant number of tour operators and travel agents have embraced online technologies as a means to expand the scope of their operations. Stakeholders believe however that one of the most significant threats facing the industry is the increasing power of social buying networks that sell travel packages and tourism products at substantially discounted rates.
