Introduction

The latest available data from the Construction and Mining Equipment Suppliers’ Association (Conmesa) shows that a total of 5,614 new units of mining and construction equipment were sold during 2017, while South Africa exported mining, quarrying and construction machinery worth US$850.6m in the same year, according to the International Trade Centre’s (ITC) Trade Map. Currently manufacturers and wholesalers of mining, quarrying and construction machinery are experiencing subdued demand for their products due to low levels of investment in the mining industry, and limited activity in the construction sector.

Strengths

• Companies invest in R&D and innovation.
• Manufactures high-quality products.
• Supplies equipment used by different economic sectors.
• The provision of thorough after-sales service.

Weaknesses

• Severe skills shortages of artisans, technicians, engineers and project managers.

Opportunities

• Establishment of the Mandela Mining Precinct.
• Exports into the rest of Africa.
• Planned spending by government on infrastructure.

Threats

• For local manufacturers, competition from numerous importers and distributors of international brands.
• Rising input costs.
• Subdued demand from the mining and construction sectors.
• Weak economy.

Outlook

Manufacturers and wholesalers of mining, quarrying and construction machinery expect markets to remain flat for most of 2019. Construction and Mining Equipment Suppliers’ Association chairman Lawrence Peters expects that the impact of an upturn after the elections will only be experienced towards the end of 2019, due to long planning and tendering processes. Barloworld is hopeful that government's infrastructure fund will stimulate demand for construction equipment, and that rising commodity prices and more positive sentiment around the Mining Charter would lead to investment in new mining projects.
