Report Coverage

This report on the mining industry in Botswana includes information on diamonds, the most important product by far, as well as aggregate, clay, coal, copper, and soda ash. It includes information on the size and state of the industry, notable players, corporate actions, trade and key trends and issues. There are profiles of 23 companies including Debswana, which dominates the industry and the diamond sector, state-owned Morupule Coal Mine, local companies Botswana Ash and Kalahari Ash, South African Raubex Group subsidiary Belabela Quarries, and foreign-owned companies such as Khoemacau Copper Mining, Lucara Botswana and Jindal Resources.

Introduction

• Although Botswana’s mining industry shrank in 2023, largely due to a decrease in diamond prices, production volumes of minerals such as copper and silver rose sharply due to mines ramping up output.
• Mining industry exports accounted for more than 70% of total export earnings.
• The industry looks set for growth as copper and silver production will increase due to mine expansions, new coal mines are being developed, and coal bed methane, manganese and nickel production should commence in the medium term.
• The country is ranked highly in terms of policy and investment attractiveness.
• A major challenge is that sand covers about 75% of the land area, making it difficult to discover new mineral deposits.

Trends

• Botswana is experiencing growing interest in its critical minerals, especially copper, manganese and nickel.
• Most products of the mining industry are exported to be further processed in other countries.

Opportunities

• Large areas of the country are underexplored.
• The government is very supportive of the mining industry.

Challenges

• Kalahari Desert sand, which complicates the discovery of mineral deposits, covers about 75% of the land area.
• Weak global growth is affecting demand for diamonds and other minerals.

Outlook

• Prices of most minerals are expected to decline in 2024 due to weaker demand and ample supply.
• De Beers expects a gradual recovery in diamond demand and prices in 2024, with larger price increases over the long term.
• The industry is expected to become more diverse as a greater variety of minerals will be produced by a larger number of companies.
• Diamond production is set to carry on for decades, while copper and silver production will increase due to mine expansions.
• The production of coal should increase as new mines are being developed, while coal bed methane, manganese and nickel production should commence in the medium term.
• Botswana’s mining industry therefore looks to be entering a period of growth.

Report Coverage

\r\nThis report focuses on the Mining Sector in Botswana and includes information on the state and size of the sector, trade statistics, corporate actions and expansion and investment developments. There are profiles of 26 companies including the country’s largest diamond producer and largest private sector employer Debswana, and Botswana Ash, the only producer of soda ash and salt. Other profiles include Khoemacau Copper Mines, which is building a copper and silver mine, Lucara, which is expanding its Karowe mine, and prospectors such as Kukama and Efora Energy.

Introduction

In the second quarter of 2019, the mining sector contributed 14.7% to Botswana’s GDP, according to the Bank of Botswana. Data from the International Trade Centre’s Trade Map shows minerals to the value of US$5.1bn were exported in 2018, which was 78% of the country’s total export earnings. In 2018, Botswana was the world’s second largest diamond producer by value and volume, after Russia, according to the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS). The country is ranked highly by the Fraser Institute’s latest Annual Survey of Mining Companies in terms of policy and investment attractiveness.

Strengths

• Botswana is an established mining country.
• Botswana is ranked highly by the Fraser Institute’s latest Annual Survey of Mining Companies.
• Botswana was the fourth largest producer of natural soda ash in 2018.
• In 2018, Botswana was the world’s second largest diamond producer by value and volume.
• Large soda ash, coal and diamond reserves.

Weaknesses

• Diamond, gold and soda ash production each dominated by one player.
• Small number of mineral producers.

Opportunities

• Deposits of coal bed methane, cobalt, copper, iron ore, lead, manganese, nickel, silver, uranium and zinc have been identified and are available to be mined.
• Large areas of the country are underexplored.

Threats

• No rail infrastructure in place to export coal.
• Poor roads in remote areas.
• Weak world economic growth leads to low diamond demand.

Outlook

The Botswana Geoscience Institute believes the country’s mining sector will become more diverse as a greater variety of minerals will be produced by a larger number of companies over the medium term. Diamond production is set to carry on for decades, while copper and silver production from the Khoemacau mine is planned to start in 2021. The production of coal should increase as soon as rail infrastructure for exports is in place, while coal bed methane, manganese and uranium production could also commence in the medium term. Botswana’s mining sector therefore looks to be entering a period of growth.
