Included are the main retailers as well as manufacturer and wholesaler, Michelle Footwear (Pty) Ltd t/a Froggie, which manufactures approximately 240,000 pairs of shoes per annum and employs 244 people. Also profiled are two new footwear groups, the BBF Safety Footwear Group (Pty) Ltd and the Bolton Footwear Group, which were formed after the acquisition of the footwear and leather division of Steinhoff International Holdings subsidiary, Kap Manufacturing (Pty) Ltd which included Jordan Shoes, Wayne Plastics, United Fram Footwear and Mossop-Western Leathers.
The South African Footwear Industry
This report focuses on the manufacture, wholesale and retail of footwear in South Africa, a sector that is valued at approximately R43bn. As with most manufacturing sectors in the country, a lack of competitiveness has resulted in South Africa becoming a net importer of shoes. 77% of all footwear is imported, with 90% of all imports originating from China. Although less than a quarter of domestic demand is met by local production, figures improved marginally in volume terms and imports decreased almost 7% during 2014.
Government Support
Government incentives introduced in 2010 as part of the DTI’s Clothing and Textile Competitiveness Programme (CTCP) have enabled footwear manufacturers to upgrade equipment, skills and processes. Department of Trade and Industry figures indicate that as at 31 March 2015 R3.7bn had been approved under the sector’s Competitiveness Improvement Programme (CIP) and R2.6bn had been disbursed since 2010. As a result of these investments there have been improvements in competitiveness, some jobs have been saved, others created and 22 new factories in the leather and footwear sector have opened. The most recent statistics available for 2014 show that there are 184 footwear manufacturers that employ 11,157 people.
