The Manufacture of Clay Bricks and Concrete Masonry Units
This report focuses on the manufacture of clay bricks and concrete masonry units, an important component of the building and construction industry. Statistics South Africa (StatsSA) figures show that the building and construction industry recorded an income of R395bn in 2014 and that the formal and informal clay brick sectors employed approximately 20,000 people. With proposed government infrastructure spending of R816bn on various construction projects as well as the need for more than 1.5 million RDP houses between 2016 and 2020 at a cost of R30bn per annum, positive growth and significant demand for bricks are expected.
A Varied Sector
There are an estimated 112 formal industrialised clay brick making units that operate in the major urban areas each producing between 0.5 million and 60 million bricks per month. There are also a large number of small to medium players with easy to use, entry-level brick machines designed for operation by unskilled labourers, particularly in rural and informal settlement areas. In the concrete masonry unit sector, 69 manufacturers located throughout the country produce concrete bricks and slabs. As far as specialised prefabricated concrete products are concerned, there is increased demand for prestressed precast hollowcore slabs, which are lighter than those produced on site and which reduce construction time by several weeks.
