The Manufacture of Soap and Cleaning Products, Wax and Polishes
This report focuses on the manufacture of soap, cleaning products, wax and polishes in South Africa. This multi-billion rand industry continues to be dominated by large multinational fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) players, notably Unilever, Reckitt Benckiser, Procter & Gamble, Colgate-Palmolive and Johnson & Johnson. The local small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) which operate in the sector generally manufacture non-branded cleaning agents that are supplied to independent wholesalers and/or to the informal sector.
A Competitive Market
Although cleaning products remain out of reach of a great number of South Africans, personal hygiene products as well as household cleaning agents and polishes are increasingly regarded as essential items by the 21st century South African consumer, and demand from low-income households is steadily rising. As economic conditions worsen however, cash-strapped consumers are increasingly trading down to unbranded products and/or house brands. The range of house brands has become varied and sophisticated, with private labels, notably Woolworths, Pick ’n Pay’s “No Name Brand”, Shoprite’s “Ritebrand” and Checkers’ “Housebrand” evolving into brands in their own right.
