Report Coverage
The South African Paint Industry examines current conditions, regulatory issues and factors influencing the success of the local manufacturing and retail sector. The report profiles 20 companies, including the three major manufacturers, Becker Industrial Coatings, a global industrial coatings company, ICI Dulux, a subsidiary of AkzoNobel which operates locally under the brand name Dulux, and Jotun Paints SA which produces and sells decorative paints and performance coatings. Also profiled is Kansai Plascon Africa which announced in February 2017 that it will acquire 100% of the operations of paint distributor, Sadolin Paint in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zanzibar and Burundi. The company currently exports paint from South Africa to ten other African countries, and has stated its intention of becoming Africa’s fastest growing coatings company.
The South African Paint Industry
The South African paint industry, valued at between R11.5bn and R12bn per annum, has undergone a shift towards the increased usage of technology and mechanisation in the last five years. The industry supports a value chain worth R150bn, employs approximately 10,000 people and is an essential supplier to the construction and manufacturing sectors as many products cannot be sold without a protective coating.
A Well-Represented Sector
The South African Paint Manufacturers Association (SAPMA) has more than 200 members and approximately 680 retail outlet members, representing paint manufacturers, raw material and services suppliers, paint retailers and painting contractors. Regulatory issues, especially those related to environmental protection are important to the trade association which intends introducing its own labelling system after it was unable to reach agreement on new standards for the industry with the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS). Also of importance is the application for increased tariffs on imported paint products as the local paint market, the largest in Africa, is beginning to experience the impact of increased volumes of cheaper imports often from markets where there are no quality compliance regulations.
