Report Coverage
This report focuses on the printing industry and includes information on the newspaper and magazine industry and printing of packaging and labels and other printed matter. It includes information on the state of the sector, the effects of the pandemic on sales, circulation and advertising, the performance of major players and corporate developments. There are profiles of 71 companies including the major players in printing such as Novus Holdings, Caxton & CTP, Bidvest’s office and print division, Hirt & Carter, and the Government Printing Works. Profiles also include print packaging players such as Mpact and Nampak, whose Bevcan division prints on the cans it manufactures. Publishing groups profiled include Media24 and Arena Holdings.
Introduction
The printing industry, which historically contributes approximately R55bn to South Africa’s GDP, providing around 65,000 formal jobs, has been in decline for two decades. The print media sector, which includes printed publications such as newspapers and magazines, has experienced significant disruption from digitisation and declining advertising spend. The coronavirus pandemic exacerbated the decline of newspaper circulation and resulted in several large companies closing or restructuring. One of the country’s well-known media companies, Associated Media Publishing closed down. The pandemic caused increased demand for packaging due to the growth in online sales and greater demand for digital printing, which is the process of printing digital images directly onto materials, without needing a printing plate.
Strengths
• A well-established printing industry, which offers a comprehensive range of services.
• Industrial/functional printing, including printed packaging and labels, remains a growth segment.
• Large companies remain abreast of global technological developments.
• The industry is innovative.
Weaknesses
• High cost to keep up with printing technology means not all small companies can remain competitive.
• Printing is outsourced to off-shore countries.
• Shortage of people with IT and technical skills, and experience to operate sophisticated printing and finishing systems.
• The industry is capital-intensive and production costs are high.
Opportunities
• African Continental Free Trade Area offers growth opportunities for printed packaging and other printed matter.
• Growth in the printed packaging sector.
• Increase demand for 3D printing.
• The development of more environmentally-friendly printing processes.
• The expansion of digital printing services.
Threats
• An increase in off-shoring of printing.
• Alcohol bans negatively affecting the packaging/label industry.
• Continued disruption of the traditional newspaper and magazine markets, especially as the pandemic continues.
• Declining consumption of printed matter, driven by the uptake of digitisation.
• Slow/delayed recovery of the economy.
• The depreciation of the local currency, which increases the cost of imported inputs.
Outlook
The operating environment is expected to remain challenging due to the poor economy, pandemic, and electricity crisis. Novus said these resulted in permanent damage on the print industry. Short-term recovery is expected, but not to pre-pandemic levels as the traditional newspaper and magazine markets have been severely disrupted. As print circulation and magazine sales continue to decline, companies are expected to continue to diversify and focus on growth areas by combining print with digital elements. 3D printing is expected to continue to grow. ARC Advisory Group’s Dick Slansky said that over the next five to ten years, “additive manufacturing will become the standard manufacturing technology. Due to the advancement of the next generation of 3D printing machines, additive manufacturing is beginning to be adopted for more volume production capacities”. Printing SA CEO Abdool Mahomed said the print industry “will expand for the foreseeable future, transforming and evolving and seeing some resurgence from companies that have adapted”. The focus over the next five years will include increased awareness of global warming, green packaging and solutions, moving to a circular economy, innovation and creativity of products, and research focusing on job skills for the sector, he said.
