Report Coverage
The report on the Recycling of Waste and Scrap examines the size of the industry, latest developments and factors influencing the success of the sector. The report also profiles 32 industry players, including Extrupet, the largest and most advanced recycler of PET bottle materials in Africa, and CRONIMET which every year recycles 13,000 tons of nickel alloy scrap metal and stainless steel scrap.
Recycling of Waste and Scrap
Currently South Africa’s waste economy is estimated to be worth R15bn. Every day 54,425 tons of waste is produced but only 3% of South Africa’s urban population regularly recycles and 90% of the waste that is produced is disposed in landfill sites. The Polokwane Declaration commits the South African Government to reducing the amount of waste to landfill and to sending 'Zero waste to landfill' by the year 2022.
A Well Represented Sector
The South African recycling industry is not subsidised by the government but non-profit organisation, the National Recycling Forum (NRF), was created to promote the recovery and recycling of recyclable materials. The domestic packaging industry established a Recovery Action Group (RAG) comprising a number of different associations while the scrap metal sector is represented by the Metal Recyclers Association (MRA). Its 150 members are responsible for 80% of the country’s metal recycling. Active in the e-waste recycling sector is eWASA, the e-Waste Association of South Africa, which reports that e-waste is the weakest performing sector with only 12% of the 322,000 tons of e-waste produced being recycled.
A Resource with Economic Potential
Although South Africa is beginning to experience a progression in waste management and is starting to explore innovative technologies to deal with waste, stakeholders believe that the country needs to view waste as a resource with economic potential. According to findings in the Green Cape Waste Management 2017 Market Intelligence Report, an additional R17bn worth of resources could be unlocked if 100% of the 13 waste streams were recycled.
