Report Coverage

This report focuses on event management including events, conferences and exhibitions and the factors that influence them including tourism. There are comprehensive profiles of 84 companies. These include major conferencing venues such as the Cape Town International Convention Centre, suppliers to the industry such as Bidvest Services, Prosound and Scan Display Solutions, tourism groups such as Tourvest and concert organisers such as Big Concerts.

Event Management

South Africa’s meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions industry is an important sector to attract foreign visitors and investment. In 2019, 11.4% of foreign tourism was attributed to this industry, where about one million business delegates are hosted annually. Factors that contribute to South Africa’s success as an events destination are the quality of infrastructure, accessibility and price. Despite being a long-haul destination, the cost of hosting a convention or exhibition in South Africa is highly competitive. Coronavirus has had a huge impact on conferences and tourism globally and in South Africa.

Competitiveness

South Africa is ranked number one in Africa in the International Congress and Convention Association ratings but has moved to second place behind Mauritius in the World Economic Forum’s Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report. East Africa is becoming highly competitive, with world-class convention centres and upmarket hotels appearing in Kampala, Nairobi, Kigali, Addis Ababa, and elsewhere. South Africa has sophisticated events infrastructure, venues and hotels. Industry stakeholders said that the water shortage in Cape Town was the biggest issue affecting the industry last year. Electricity shortages, crime and coronavirus are significant threats to the industry

Government Initiatives

The Tourism and Trade, Industry and Competition departments play significant roles in the event management industry as they oversee international and domestic tourism promotion and development, national compliance standards for events, funding and consumer protection. In 2019, the Southern African National Convention Bureau submitted 108 bids for international meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions. The bureau has prioritised the automotive, chemical, pharmaceutical, agri-processing, electronics and biofuels for future development.

Report coverage

The report on the Events sector describes current conditions, South Africa’s appeal as a destination for event activity and factors influencing the success of the sector. The report profiles 95 companies including exhibition organisers, Thebe Reed and Fiera Milano Exhibitions Africa (FMEA), owner of The Good Food and Wine Show. Also profiled are conference organisers such as Spintelligent (Pty) Ltd and Scatterlings of Africa (Pty) Ltd, as well as public relations companies and equipment hire companies.

The Events Management Industry

The Event Management industry contributed R74.9bn to the national economy and created 151,950 jobs in 2015. The Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions (MICE) segment has become one of the most important sectors for attracting foreign visitors and investment into the country, with 11.4% of foreign tourists coming to the country solely for MICE activity. The successful hosting of the International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2016) in Durban during July 2016, which attracted approximately 18,000 delegates and 1,000 journalists, clearly illustrates that South Africa has “reached maturity and competes globally with the very best.”

Investment into Infrastructure

Despite the challenging economic environment with 0% growth predicted for 2016, investment into event-specific infrastructure continues. The new Century City Conference Centre began operating in Cape Town in 2016 and the R832m expansion of the Cape Town International Conference Centre (CTICC) is due to be completed in 2017. New venues include Aquila, Lanzerac, Rustenburg International Convention Centre and Tshwane International Convention Centre while the Ticketpro Dome in Johannesburg recently added a new venue facility, The Blue Label Wing Conference and Events Venue.

A gateway to the rest of Africa

Companies see Africa as a unique and interesting destination and are attracted by Africa’s growing middle class. The continent is becoming more popular as a MICE venue and there are currently 123 African venues listed in the 2015/2016 Business Events Africa Guidebook. Role players view the South African market as a first step to expansion into the rest of Africa.

There have been a number of new entrants to the sector. Companies such as MMI South Africa (Pty) Ltd, a subsidiary of Messe Munich, and Thebe Reed Exhibitions, a joint venture between Reed UK and the Thebe Tourism Group, have been established. New associations have set up office in the country: a regional African office of ICCA was opened in Johannesburg in 2013; and the South African National Convention Bureau (SANCB) was established within the Department of Tourism. There has also been growth in the conference exhibition sector of the industry. World Travel Market (WTM) Africa was introduced in 2014, for example, and 500 qualified buyers attended and 5,386 pre-scheduled appointments with exhibitors were made.
