Manufacture and Wholesale of Pumps, Compressors, Taps and Valves
This report focuses on the manufacture and wholesale of pumps, compressors, taps and valves in South Africa. The industry manufactures a diverse range of products from small items used in the pharmaceutical industry to massive slurry pumps, dewatering pumps and valves used in the mining industry. Companies in the sector include branches of large multinational companies, local manufacturers of various sizes, wholesalers and importers.
The valve and pumps sector, which is valued at approximately R5.5bn per annum, has been affected by increasing imports, the weak local economy, volatile exchange rates and insufficient skills. The increasing cost of production has resulted in many manufacturers ceasing manufacturing to become resellers of products imported mainly from China. Industry players report this has led to a lack of investment in new technology and products. The repair and refurbishment of critical valves does, however, present significant opportunities in the industry. Half of the 120 companies in the pump sector manufacture all or some of their products locally, but there is pressure on local manufacturers as the industry becomes increasingly dominated by imports. Industry concerns include exchange rate volatility, low productivity levels, increasing labour costs, higher production costs, stagnant demand and declining net operating surpluses.
This report focuses on the Manufacture and Wholesale of Pumps, Compressors, Taps and Valves. It includes comprehensive profiles of 32 companies including the largest pump manufacturers in South Africa, Weir Minerals, KSB and Sulzer Pumps SA. It also includes a profiles on Ainsworth Engineering, which, together with sister company UVC, has changed ownership.
