Report Coverage

This report focuses on the printing industry and includes information on the newspaper and magazine industry and printing of packaging and labels and other printed matter. It includes information on the state of the sector, the effects of the pandemic on sales, circulation and advertising, the performance of major players and corporate developments. There are profiles of 71 companies including the major players in printing such as Novus Holdings, Caxton & CTP, Bidvest’s office and print division, Hirt & Carter, and the Government Printing Works. Profiles also include print packaging players such as Mpact and Nampak, whose Bevcan division prints on the cans it manufactures. Publishing groups profiled include Media24 and Arena Holdings.

Introduction

The printing industry, which historically contributes approximately R55bn to South Africa’s GDP, providing around 65,000 formal jobs, has been in decline for two decades. The print media sector, which includes printed publications such as newspapers and magazines, has experienced significant disruption from digitisation and declining advertising spend. The coronavirus pandemic exacerbated the decline of newspaper circulation and resulted in several large companies closing or restructuring. One of the country’s well-known media companies, Associated Media Publishing closed down. The pandemic caused increased demand for packaging due to the growth in online sales and greater demand for digital printing, which is the process of printing digital images directly onto materials, without needing a printing plate.

Strengths

• A well-established printing industry, which offers a comprehensive range of services.
• Industrial/functional printing, including printed packaging and labels, remains a growth segment.
• Large companies remain abreast of global technological developments.
• The industry is innovative.

Weaknesses

• High cost to keep up with printing technology means not all small companies can remain competitive.
• Printing is outsourced to off-shore countries.
• Shortage of people with IT and technical skills, and experience to operate sophisticated printing and finishing systems.
• The industry is capital-intensive and production costs are high.

Opportunities

• African Continental Free Trade Area offers growth opportunities for printed packaging and other printed matter.
• Growth in the printed packaging sector.
• Increase demand for 3D printing.
• The development of more environmentally-friendly printing processes.
• The expansion of digital printing services.

Threats

•  An increase in off-shoring of printing.
• Alcohol bans negatively affecting the packaging/label industry.
• Continued disruption of the traditional newspaper and magazine markets, especially as the pandemic continues.
• Declining consumption of printed matter, driven by the uptake of digitisation.
• Slow/delayed recovery of the economy.
• The depreciation of the local currency, which increases the cost of imported inputs.

Outlook

The operating environment is expected to remain challenging due to the poor economy, pandemic, and electricity crisis. Novus said these resulted in permanent damage on the print industry. Short-term recovery is expected, but not to pre-pandemic levels as the traditional newspaper and magazine markets have been severely disrupted. As print circulation and magazine sales continue to decline, companies are expected to continue to diversify and focus on growth areas by combining print with digital elements. 3D printing is expected to continue to grow. ARC Advisory Group’s Dick Slansky said that over the next five to ten years, “additive manufacturing will become the standard manufacturing technology. Due to the advancement of the next generation of 3D printing machines, additive manufacturing is beginning to be adopted for more volume production capacities”. Printing SA CEO Abdool Mahomed said the print industry “will expand for the foreseeable future, transforming and evolving and seeing some resurgence from companies that have adapted”. The focus over the next five years will include increased awareness of global warming, green packaging and solutions, moving to a circular economy, innovation and creativity of products, and research focusing on job skills for the sector, he said.

Introduction

The South African printing industry is a highly complex and dynamic sector, which plays a key role in the domestic economy. In 2017, local printers and their suppliers contributed approximately R55bn to the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) and provided around 45,000 jobs. Disruption, precipitated largely by digitisation, continues to drive the decline of the industry’s commercial analogue printing segment. With print output volumes on a steady downward trajectory, numerous South African printing houses have opted to reposition themselves by diversifying their service offerings. Although some role players warn that the traditional print industry is in a state of upheaval, others say that the innovative technological advances sweeping through the sector present a multitude of possibilities and new opportunities for players across the printing value chain.

Strengths

• Major media publishing houses are multi-platform companies that produce print and digital publications, and increasingly, non-media platforms, such as the hosting of events.
• Media publishers are becoming increasingly innovative and many are supplementing text with podcasts, videos, livestreaming and live blogging, which allows for rolling coverage using text, images, audio and video.
• South Africa has a dynamic, well-developed media publishing industry, which produces a diversity of high quality publications.
• The freedom of the press in enshrined in the South African constitution. The country has a robust media, which ranks 31st out of 180 in the 2020 World Press Freedom Index.
• The South African media performs a crucial societal role as ‘gatekeeper’, exposing corruption and holding public office bearers and the private sector to account.

Weaknesses

• English and Afrikaans-language publications are dominant and there are relatively few mainstream publications in vernacular languages.
• In print media, production and distribution costs are high.
• Mainstream media publishing is dominated by four major players.
• Public trust in the media is low.
• There is a lack of journalistic rigour, particularly online.

Opportunities

• The conversion of text into podcasts.
• The development of multi-platform business models, incorporating media and non-media.
• The development of new African language publications.
• The monetisation of online channels.
• Using artificial intelligence to create integrated marketing solutions and customised publications.

Threats

• Domestic and global economic pressures.
• Growing competition for advertising spend, with the tech titans increasingly eroding market share.
• The continued decline in advertising and circulation revenues, resulting in the demise of print titles.
• The continued propagation of misleading coverage and fake news via social media and other media channels.
• The impact of the coronavirus pandemic on lives and livelihoods.
• The incursion of local and international radio and television broadcasting companies into the online reporting space.
• The possible signing into law of the “secrecy bill” and other measures that may curtail media freedom.

Outlook

With preparations for South Africa’s 2019 general election underway, analysts predict that political tensions will continue to intensify and that economic pressures will persist. Meaningful economic growth is not anticipated in the short-term. The challenging operating environment continues to dampen the growth prospects of the South African printing sector and print volumes are expected to remain on a downward trajectory. As local printing houses increasingly diversify their revenue streams, capital expenditure on printing assets is expected to contract. Although commentators warn that the prevailing headwinds are not expected to ease significantly in the foreseeable future, role players are generally confident that professional printing services will continue to remain relevant across most sectors of the domestic economy. They identify print packaging, printed labels, security printing and 3D-printing as segments that offer significant growth potential in South Africa, as well as in other sub-Saharan African markets.

Report Coverage

The Printing Industry details the current state of the sector, the impact of digitisation and other factors influencing the success of the industry. The report also profiles 49 players in the market, including leaders in the General Printing and Print Finishing segments, Caxton & CTP Publishers and Printers Ltd and Novus Holdings Ltd, formerly the Paarl Media Group. Also profiled are Nampak, Mpact and AstraPak, the dominant companies in South Africa’s Print Packaging market.

Introduction

The South African printing industry, which generated revenue of R56bn in 2015, performs a valuable role in the South African economy and provides over 50,000 employment opportunities. In recent years fundamental changes have swept through the industry, with digital printing technologies emerging as mainstream processes at the expense of conventional analogue printing. As far-reaching technological advances, including 3D printing, disrupt the traditional print landscape, some local printers report that they have been compelled to reposition themselves in the highly complex market in order to remain relevant.

Strengths

• Larger companies operating within the industry remain abreast of global technological developments and harness the latest technologies.
• South Africa has a well established printing industry, which offers a comprehensive range of services.
• The local print packaging sub-sector is robust.
• The South African printing sector is the largest industry of its kind in Africa.

Weaknesses

• Smaller print service providers are generally uncompetitive.
• The industry is capital-intensive and production costs are high.
• The South African printing market has an oversupply of web and gravure print capacity.
• There is a critical shortage of people with the requisite skills and experience to operate sophisticated printing and finishing systems.
• There is a lack of competition in the commercial web and publication gravure printing market, which is dominated by the Novus Holdings - Caxton & CTP duopoly.

Opportunities

• The commercialisation of 3D printing.
• The development of more environmentally friendly printing processes.
• The expansion of digital printing services for the packaging and textile markets.
• The sub-Saharan African market offers potential for growth. There is a particularly strong demand for textile printing, flatbed UV printing, printed packaging, printed labels, educational printed matter, as well as electoral security printing.

Threats

•  An increase in the off-shoring of printing.
• Declining consumption of printing paper, driven by the uptake of digitisation.
• Domestic political and economic instability, as well as global geopolitical and macroeconomic pressures.
• Ongoing calls for a ‘paperless’ society, which are motivated by misperceptions relating to the industry’s environmental impact.
• The depreciation of the local currency, which will drive up the cost of imported inputs.

Outlook

With innovations such as “Smart Packaging”, 2.5D and 4D printing set to enter the market, analysts predict that the printing industry is poised to become even more dynamic. While some printers are questioning the merits of technology that enables printed images to “communicate” with consumers, others are embracing change and say that they are prepared to “re-imagine” their role within the broader communications sector. Going forward, stakeholders anticipate that there will be greater convergence of traditional and digital printing solutions. While print volumes are predicted to remain on a downward trajectory, higher value printing is expected to increase. Despite poor macroeconomic fundamentals and the challenging trading environment, role players in the industry say that opportunities for growth exist in the digitally printed packaging segment, as well as in the commercialisation of 3D printing.

Report Coverage

The report on the South African printing industry describes the current market, lists corporate actions and other developments within the sector and focuses on factors influencing the success of the industry. The report profiles the major South African companies within the sector as well as print on demand franchises and SMMEs such as Beith Digital (Pty) Ltd and Altstadt Printing CC.

Introduction

This report focuses on South Africa’s printing sector. The industry plays a valuable role in the local economy, providing approximately 54,000 formal jobs and generating annual revenue of around R51bn. During the past decade, technological developments have radically transformed the traditional printing industry, ushering in the ‘New Print’ era of digital processes and innovative 3D printing technologies. Although many positive advances have been made in the printing sector, analysts caution that the negative impact of digital migration on certain segments of the industry is considerable.

Strengths

• Larger companies operating within the industry, remain abreast of global technological developments and harness the latest technologies
• South Africa has a well established printing industry, which offers a comprehensive range of services.
• The local print packaging sub-sector is robust.
• The South African printing sector is the largest industry of its kind in Africa.

Weaknesses

• Smaller print service providers are generally uncompetitive.
• The commercial web and publication gravure printing market is dominated by the Novus Holdings - Caxton & CTP duopoly.
• The industry is capital intensive and production costs are high
• The South African printing market has an oversupply of web and gravure print capacity.
• There is a shortage of skilled staff.

Opportunities

• The commercialisation of 3D printing.
• The development of more environmentally friendly printing processes.
• The expansion of digital printing services such as flatbed digital cutting and Print-on-Demand.
• The sub-Saharan African market offers potential for growth. There is a particularly strong demand for textile printing, flatbed UV printing, printed packaging, printed labels, educational printed matter, as well as electoral security printing.

Threats

•  Increasing digitisation, leading to the decline of printed publications and other printed matter.
• Power insecurity: blackouts and load-shedding affect print service providers’ ability to meet deadlines and drive up operating costs.
• Sustained calls for the adoption of ‘paperless’ systems.
• The depreciation of the local currency, which continues to drive up the cost of imported inputs.
• The off-shoring of printing.

Outlook

South Africa’s rapidly changing printing industry faces pressing challenges. Analysts warn that smaller printing companies that fail to remain abreast of technological advances may not survive. They further caution that rationalisation is likely to result in the closure of unprofitable printing divisions, such as stationery. Consolidation in the offset lithographic market is strongly anticipated. Many local print service providers have already started to diversify their product offerings. Going forward, this trend is predicted to continue, with traditional paper-based printing companies expanding their range of services to include textile printing or printed packaging. As digitisation continues to erode demand for printed matter, stakeholders believe that wide-format printing specialists will increasingly seek opportunities in the offline advertising market. Despite the challenges facing the sector, analysts believe that the uptake of digital printing technologies will continue to present print service providers with a number of opportunities, not least of which is the commercialisation of 3D printing, which appears set to turn the traditional printing industry on its head.
