Among other companies profiled are Meridian Agrochemical Company, Peninsula Organics, Kaap Agri and Senwes.

Introduction

This report focuses on the manufacture, wholesale and retail of fertilisers and nitrogen compounds in South Africa. The value of fertiliser purchases, according to Stats SA, was R18.2bn in 2019, the most recent year for which figures are available. The fertiliser industry is experiencing a bumper year on the back of rising fertiliser prices and record maize production, which accounts for more than half of all fertiliser consumed in the country. However, there is concern over the increasing growth in imports and decrease in local production. The sector is also faced with the threat of land expropriation and climate change which could increase the likelihood of drought in future years. To address environmental issues, the industry is focusing on the efficient use of fertiliser and green products, such as the production of green ammonia.

Strengths

• Increased investments in production facilities for zinc and phosphorus.
• Strong enforcement by competition authorities.
• Well-established fertiliser industry with high levels of capital investment.

Weaknesses

• Significant increase in imports since 2017.
• Technological developments in the sector occur largely outside South Africa.

Opportunities

• Advanced efficiency products such as control release, slow release, sulphur-coated products, water soluble powders, nitrification inhibitors and urease inhibitors.
• Government’s plan to develop state-owned land.
• Growing population needing food security will contribute to high demand for end-products.
• Small-scale farming is now higher on the policy agenda, and government has a range of projects and programmes to support development.
• The huge potential for agriculture in Africa, and South African fertiliser companies are well positioned to sell into the Southern African region.

Threats

• Climate change, particularly the increased risk of drought.
• Costly and unreliable electricity supply.
• Exchange rate volatility.
• Increasingly stringent environmental, health and safety regulations.
• Lack of skilled chemical and mechanical engineers.
• Land expropriation without compensation.
• Rising input costs, mainly due to increasing transport and electricity prices.
• The development of new technologies that will result in decreased fertiliser use.

Outlook

The outlook for the fertiliser industry is positive. The Fertiliser Association of South Africa CEO Pieter Haumann says the combination of high prices and high crop yields, together with an expected bumper maize crop in 2021, make the fertiliser industry one of South Africa’s few booming sectors currently. “We’re in the best situation we’ve been in years,” he says. FNB Agribusiness head of information and marketing Dawie Maree says opportunities for the use of fertilisers for long-term crops (such as citrus and nuts) are very attractive given the growth in these subsectors. The International Fertilizer Association anticipates a 2% increase in global fertiliser use to 193.5Mt in 2020/21 and a 1% increase in 2021/22. It said while the lingering pandemic will probably not affect fertiliser logistics significantly, the uneven nature of global economic recovery could affect consumer food demand, government budgets, farmers’ input purchasing behaviour and their financing conditions. However, Yara said in its Q1 2021 report that while recent industry consultant projections show higher nitrogen supply growth in 2021, there has been limited new capacity which has started operating, adding that the risk of project delays is stronger than normal due to the pandemic.

Report Coverage

The South African Fertiliser and Nitrogen Compounds Industry focuses on the current state of the domestic industry where retail prices have been distorted by a fertiliser cartel and Sasol’s abuse of dominance over the years, and factors influencing the success of the sector. The report profiles 41 manufacturers and/or wholesalers of organic and inorganic fertiliser, including local giants, Foskor, Sasol and Omnia. Also profiled are smaller companies such as Bosveld Phosphates (Pty) Ltd which manufactures, blends and wholesales NPK fertilisers, and Chemtura (Pty) Ltd which imports agricultural chemicals from Europe and supplies distributors and seed companies.

Introduction

This report focuses on the manufacture, wholesale and retail of fertilisers and nitrogen compounds in South Africa. Statistics distributed by the Department of Agriculture to the Fertiliser Association of Southern Africa (FERTASA) show the domestic industry has an estimated value of R7.5bn per annum. According to the World Bank, fertilisers will be essential if agricultural productivity is to be increased by 70% by 2050 when the global population is expected to reach 9 billion. Locally increasing quantities of cheaper imports, mainly from China are putting pressure on the manufacturing sector.

Strengths

• Good access to some raw materials.
• Well established fertiliser industry with high levels of capital investment

Weaknesses

• Energy-intensive production processes and environmental impact of these processes.
• High technology and research and development costs.
• Reliance on imports for supply of urea and potassium chloride.

Opportunities

• Growing population needing food security will contribute to high demand.
• Low natural gas prices in America and Canada and increased supply present opportunities for fertiliser manufacturers to open new plants.
• The huge potential for agriculture in Africa.

Threats

• Advances in plastics technology in the form of agricultural films are reducing the demand for chemical fertilisers.
• Increasing quantity of cheap imports from China.
• Increasingly stringent environmental, health and safety regulations.
• Lack of skilled chemical and mechanical engineers.
• Rising input costs, mainly due to increasing transport and electricity prices.

Outlook

Global fertiliser use is expected to increase to more than 200.5 million tons in 2018, with demand from Africa increasing as its population increases. The global chemical industry faces stringent environmental, health and safety regulation and in South Africa the proposed carbon tax, due to be implemented from January 2016, could have a negative effect on the fertiliser industry. Forecasts by the IMF of weak economic growth of 1.4% for 2015 and 1.3% for 2016 are an area of concern, as is the weakening Rand because of the industry’s reliance on imported urea and potassium for the manufacture of its products. Analysts believe that the absence of a reliable supply of electricity and increasing energy costs coupled with increasing imports of cheap fertiliser from China mean that the domestic fertiliser industry will remain under pressure for some years to come.
