The IT Industry in South Africa

The pandemic has given an enormous boost to digital transformation, and the IT industry. Supply chain issues, chip shortages, an upsurge in cybercrime, and the July riots all had a major impact on South African companies and the way they work. The IT sector is expecting the increasing access to broadband and fibre and the release of spectrum to drive digital transformation in the country. Ratings of South Africa’s IT industry compared to top global performers on network readiness to optimise the use of ICTs, the relationship between ICT infrastructure investment and economic growth and digital competitiveness show that South Africa’s rankings are low compared to global economies and the highest on the African continent.

Trends

The adoption of hybrid work models and most leaders of large companies in South Africa expect to adopt a more hybrid way of working permanently. The pandemic created greater impetus for digitalisation uptake, which allows companies to use their data more effectively to gain better insight and thus become more competitive. Key drivers in the sector include artificial intelligence, cloud computing, big data analytics, 5G and the internet of things.

Cybersecurity and Crime

The move to remote work has exposed many security risks, and it is estimated that the global average cost of a data breach increased by 10% year-on-year in 2021. In South Africa there have been a number of attacks such as on Transnet Port Terminals, which brought ports and railways to a standstill. Ransomware attacks are the top cyberthreat for the year ahead, followed by business interruptions.

Report Coverage

This report focuses on the IT industry, including hardware manufacturing, assembly, and supply; software development and supply; and retail sales of hardware and software. The report includes comprehensive information on the state and size of the sector, corporate action in South Africa and on the continent, private sector and government initiatives relating to online and technology-driven learning and e-commerce during lockdown and research and development. There are profiles of 108 companies including local divisions of international players such as Intel, IBM and Cisco, major homegrown companies such as Dimension Data, Datatec and EOH and specialised companies such as Spark ATM Systems and Lumbro Time Systems.

The IT Industry

Technology and internet connectivity have helped to maintain business continuity, keep children in education and ensure online access to essential goods and services during the coronavirus pandemic. However, the pandemic has also exposed significant areas of digital inequality and exclusion in areas without internet access. It is estimated that that there are more than 20,000 companies in the ICT sector that contributes approximately 8% to South Africa’s GDP. South Africa’s IT sector is generally robust, has access to the latest technologies and methodologies and underpins the operations of most other sectors of the economy. There is, however, a significant shortage of specialised skills in the sector.

Coronavirus

Lockdown restrictions resulted in increased adoption of digitalisation of business processes, remote working, e-learning, e-commerce, e-banking, e-payment services, e-insurance, tele-medicine and virtual events resulting in a higher demand for IT technologies and services to support these activities. Many sectors may permanently embrace working from home, which may lead to additional revenue for the IT sector. Commentators indicate that lockdowns catapulted e-commerce forward by at least five years. However, cybersecurity risks have increased as home users may not have effective security systems.

Report Coverage

This report focuses on the IT industry, including hardware manufacturing, assembly, and supply; software development and supply; and retail sales of both hardware and software. It examines the state and size of the industry, trends, new technologies and innovations and factors influencing the sector’s success. There are comprehensive profiles of 112 companies including South African units of international groups such as Microsoft, Dell and Oracle, and South African-bred companies such as AdaptIT, Altron and Dimension Data, as well as companies under pressure such as EOH and Ayo Technologies, which is the subject of investigation following an investment by the Public Investment Corporation.

The IT Industry

IT spend in South Africa is forecast to increase at a higher pace than the economy in 2019. Although the general state of the economy has a direct impact on the growth of the ICT sector, its customers continue to invest in technology and the sector consistently shows a growth rate that is higher than GDP. Cybersecurity is a high priority, with global statistics indicating that South Africa is the third most targeted country in the world for cyber-attacks. Alleged IT-related procurement irregularities revealed through a number of commissions of inquiry and investigations continue to affect the reputation of some industry players. It is estimated that there are over 13,000 IT companies and over 3,000 electronics companies in South Africa with the vast majority being small companies employing less than 50 people.

Growth Trends

New and growing trends will provide significant opportunities for small and large players in the sector. These include growth in telecommunications, data centre revenues and artificial intelligence and the internet of things, where start-ups are expected to lead innovation. Digital transformation to improve customer experiences and online purchasing, fintech banking, blockchain, augmented reality and virtual reality are some of the technologies that will disrupt the South African ICT industry in 2019. The industry is characterised by consolidation and convergence of companies within the IT sector, and between companies in the IT and telecommunications sectors.

Report Coverage

The detailed South African Information Technology Sector report provides statistics and ratings for the local industry, describes current conditions and discusses the factors that include the success of the sector. Business Connexion (BCX) Group Ltd, formerly known as Telkom Business Connexion, is one of the 119 companies profiled in the report. Since its re-branding in February 2017, the company has announced the sale of its ICT training solutions subsidiary Netcampus and entered into a partnership with GE aimed at providing digital technological solutions to the agri-processing sector. Also profiled is 4Sight Group, the first pure technology company to list on the JSE’s AltX in 18 years. The group was formed after the acquisition of digital services company Digitata Mauritius in June 2017. In October 2017 it acquired 100% of the shares in BluESP Holdings and its wholly-owned subsidiary BluESP (Pty) Ltd, and shortly afterwards in December it acquired AGE Technologies JHB Pty Ltd.

The South African Information Technology Sector

The Information Technology (IT) sector is highly competitive and operates in a rapidly changing landscape with new technologies posing both an opportunity and a threat. The South African IT sector, with an estimated annual market value of R270bn for 2017, or 6% of GDP, is expected to grow at 4% for 2017, down from 5% in 2016.

A Sector Impacted by Slow Economic Growth

Although the country moved out of recession in Q2:2017, showing a GDP growth of 2.5% followed by growth of 3.3% in Q3, slow economic growth has already led to a cut in spending on IT products, services and training. The current economic climate and the volatility of the Rand also reduce the finance available for start-ups and mean that imported hardware and software has become more expensive. Poor economic growth, high unemployment and increasing household expenses also influence the household disposable income available to spend on consumer electronics.

Report Coverage

The South African Information Technology Sector report describes current conditions in the industry which comprises hardware manufacturing, assembly, consulting and supply; software development, consulting and supply; and retail sales of hardware and software. Recent developments including the challenges facing the IT sector and merger and acquisition activity are included in this detailed report. In total 97 companies involved in the sector are profiled, ranging from major players EOH Holdings Ltd and Dimension Data, to small consultancies such as Faranani IT Services (Pty) Ltd and Evetech (Pty) Ltd, a computer system builder and retailer of computer related products.

The South African Information Technology Sector

Information Technology (IT) has become an important enabler of economic development and social inclusion, and in the words of the Minister of Telecommunications and Postal Services, “It transforms how we live, how we do business, how we relate to each other and even how we play.” Increasing by 3.8% from 2015, South African IT spend for 2016 is expected to reach R272bn. Although estimates of the IT sector’s contribution to GDP vary between 1% and 6%, most stakeholders agree that delays in the implementation of the National Integrated ICT Policy White Paper and vital projects such as digital migration and SA Connect are restricting the growth of the sector as well as South Africa’s economic growth and social development.

A Rapidly Changing Sector

Within the IT sector the latest trend is the 4th Industrial Revolution which consists of new technologies that will seamlessly connect billions of people and devices, thereby having an impact on all disciplines, economies and industries. These advances in technology have been identified as the top megatrend that will transform the ways in which companies do business over the next five years. The IT industry is characterised by consolidations and convergence of companies within the sector, and between companies in the IT and telecommunications sectors. Analysts believe that in such a competitive and rapidly changing industry, it is critical to maintain a competitive edge through mergers, key acquisitions, joint ventures, partnerships, expansion and disposals.
