Retail of Furniture, Appliances and White Goods in South Africa

Sales of household furniture, equipment and appliances grew strongly in 2021, but growth has since slowed. Retailers have forecast a tough 2023 as consumers have come under pressure from increasing interest rates, and a slowing economy. Power cuts have driven demand for appliances like gas stoves and cookers, while constraining operations for retailers, many of whom are looking to procure alternative energy sources to ensure trading is not disrupted. Delays at ports and high shipping rates have resulted in many retailers sourcing more furniture from local suppliers, while online sales continue to grow.

Trends

Trends include the growth in online sales, rent-to-own, the increased sourcing of furniture from local manufacturers over imports, increased credit sales, the growth in Chinese appliance brands and the growing importance of the second-hand furniture market. The power shortage has affected retailers’ operations and is driving demand for certain goods, while propelling appliance manufacturers to develop and sell energy-efficient appliances.

Key Issues

Hybrid work means demand for office furniture remains suppressed even though office vacancies are beginning to decline. TFG’s 2022 acquisition of Tapestry Home Brands could increase competition among key players and the addition of new retail stores, products and services by existing players could increase competition in the retail of household furniture and appliances. The furniture sector masterplan aims to revive the manufacture, retail and export of South African furniture.

Retail of Furniture, Appliances and White Goods in South Africa

Despite losing weeks of trade as stores were closed during hard lockdown, retailer’s sales of furniture, appliances and white goods declined by only 3.7% in 2020, at a slightly lower rate than total retail sales. Sales recovered strongly in the early months of 2021, but following the onset of the third wave of the pandemic, unrest in July and supply constraints, sales were slower in June, July and August. The industry has benefitted from people establishing offices to work from home and increased spending on home furniture and appliances as people have had to spend more time at home.

Trends

An increasing number of furniture and appliance sales in the country are now concluded online. Sales of small home appliances like kettles, coffee makers, microwaves and vacuum cleaners, grew in 2020 as consumers stuck at home during lockdown bought new appliances. In the constrained economic environment, sales are increasingly being driven by promotions. Credit sales continue to decline as a percentage of retail sales. Some retailers have increased their stock levels amid concerns over supply constraints.

Logistics

Most chains have centralised distribution and have implemented warehouse management technologies to cut costs and ensure little disruption to supply. Logistics and distribution is a major challenge for retailers that operate on the African continent and companies often need to make significant upfront investment in distribution centres. Most freight to Africa is transported on roads

Report Coverage

This report focuses on the retail of furniture, appliances and white goods in South Africa, including information on the size and state of the industry and factors influencing its success. Developments including those at Steinhoff, the growth in online sales and expansion of South African furniture retailers on the continent are discussed. There are comprehensive profiles of 16 companies including major players such as JD Group, Shoprite and Lewis, that have a combined footprint of 2,040 stores in South Africa.

Retail of Furniture and Appliances

The furniture and appliance industry’s contribution to overall retail sales continues to contract from 5.4% of total retail sales in 2016 to 4.25%, equating to R44.48bn, in 2018. However, household furniture, appliances and equipment sales grew 10.6% in 2018 against overall retail sales growth of 2.1%, despite the fallout from the revelation of accounting irregularities at Steinhoff International in December 2017. Steinhoff owns a majority stake in Pepkor, the country’s largest furniture retailer through JD Group.

Continued Growth

The most recent sales figures for October, November and December 2018, boosted by Black Friday, have been particularly high against the backdrop of sluggish retail sales and despite the poor economy and some upheaval in the industry.

Report Coverage

The Retail of Furniture, Appliances and White Goods report describes the current environment, the effect of changes to the National Credit Act which constrained consumers’ access to credit and other factors that influence the success of the sector. The report profiles 18 role players, including the JD Group, which has 745 furniture outlets and 112 consumer electronics and appliances outlets. Also profiled is another leader in the sector, Lewis Group Ltd which acquired 57 Ellerines and Beares stores for approximately R250m in early 2016, bringing its presence outside the country to 120 stores located in Nambia, Lesotho, Botswana and Swaziland.

Retail of Furniture, Appliances and White Goods

The furniture and appliance industry is one of the country’s smallest retail sectors, contributing just 5.4% to total retail sales in 2016, equating to R41.3bn. The three main furniture and appliance retailers, JD Group, Shoprite and Lewis, have a combined footprint of more than 2,200 stores in the country and the four main retailers together hold an estimated 56% of the domestic market.

Difficult Economic Conditions

Retailers experienced the weakest growth in seven years during 2016, with trade for household furniture, appliances and equipment showing negative growth. The general political climate, coupled with low credit growth, low investment levels, and prolonged drought all impacted on consumer spending as the cost of living escalated. Analysts expect that the recent downgrading of South Africa’s economic prospects by ratings agencies Fitch, Standard & Poor and Moody’s will negatively impact growth in the retail sector in the period ahead.

Growth in Online Retailing

Internet-based retail reached 1% of total South African retail sales in 2016 and showed 20% growth, reaching a value of R9bn. This increase has been attributed to the high mobile penetration rate, increasing technological knowledge and the fact that more secure payment options are available. Most retailers have a website with online ordering capabilities and although there are retailers who only retail online, this is still a niche market.

Report Coverage

The Retail of Furniture, Appliances and White Goods discusses conditions in the local sector, the responses of retailers to slow economic growth and factors influencing the sector’s success. The report also profiles 17 retailers, including United Furniture Outlets (Pty) Ltd t/a UFO, which has 28 stores countrywide, and the Mr Price Group, which has 166 Mr Price Home stores and 278 Sheet Street stores.

Retail of Furniture, Appliances and White Goods

This report focuses on the retail of furniture, appliances and white goods, one of South Africa’s smallest retail sectors, which contributed just 5% to total retail sales in 2014. Currently there are only four main furniture and appliance retailers left in the market after the collapse of Ellerines at the end of 2014 when its parent company, African Bank, went bankrupt.

A sector Dependent on Credit

As many of the products sold are high-value items, this retail sector has traditionally relied on the granting of credit to consumers, with nearly 70% of goods bought on credit. However recent changes to government legislation, specifically the Consumer Protection Act and the National Credit Act, have restricted consumers’ access to credit. This is likely to be intensified in light of slow economic growth and the growing indebtedness of consumers. The contravention of the National Credit Act during 2015 by two major retailers, Lewis and the Joshua Doore (JD) Group, is likely to result in tougher regulation and retailers having to become more reliant on their products rather than financial services for income.

Response to Economic Conditions

With growth in the sector forecast at less than 2% in the short-term, retailers are attempting to control costs by focusing on ongoing organic growth, greater efficiencies and diversification. With a GDP of nearly 5%, rising household incomes, fast urbanisation and a growing middle class, sub-Saharan Africa is viewed by furniture retailers as a region of massive potential. Meanwhile internet retail, although still a small market locally, is gaining momentum and there is an increase in the number of internet retailers specialising in fast-moving consumer goods.
