Transparency Rules

It can be argued that the benefits of corporate limited liability should be reciprocated by a corporate commitment to transparency. The reasons for corporate secrecy are likely the same reasons society requires corporate transparency. It can also be argued that the knowledge of a corporate executive living in Sandhurst and owning a flat in Melrose Arch is not necessarily in the public interest but it is probably in his wife’s interest.

Catching Up With Our Neighbours

The intention of the ANC when it created the Department of Public Enterprises (DPE) in 1999 was laudable in that it was thought that it would give a single minister with a mandate of inclusive growth and poverty alleviation control of the largest State-Owned Entities (SOEs) to achieve those objectives. But there were unintended consequences. It made these critical entities more easily accessible to outside interests with their own agenda, and the structure was not sufficiently robust to effectively manage the diverse demands of the SOEs in its portfolio.
